Sarod and Tabla : Debu Nayak and Anirban Dasgupta

Debapriya Nayak (Debu Nayak) was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and began learning Tabla at the age of three from his grandfather, Chaudhury Kausalya Nandan, who was an accomplished pakhawaj and tabla player of the Punjab Gharana. Later, Debu became a disciple of Pt. Radhakanta Nandi of Kolkata (Benaras Gharana). In 1981, Debu came to USA to pursue higher studies and continued his tabla taalim (guidance) from Tabla Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain at Ali Akbar College of Music (1981-1983). Later, he went on to learn from Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Pt. Samir Chatterjee of Farukhabad Tradition of Tabla playing which continues till today.
Currently Debu remains a ‘Ganda Bandha’ shishya of Pt. Samir Chatterjee. Debu is an accomplished soloist and accompanist. He has performed with renowned artists like Pt. Vinayak Torvi, Pt. Ramesh Mishra, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Fahimuddin Dagar, Habib Wali Mohammad, Asif Ali Khan, Shahanaz Rahamatulla, Bhupen Hazarika, Salil Chaudhury, Kabir Suman, Gaurav Mazumdar, Partha Bose and many others. Debu is a versatile Tabla player who performs not only with Indian classical music but also with with many other genres such as Bengali “Adhunik” songs, Nazrul Giti, Ghazals, sufi music, Rabindra sangeet, and Jazz-fusion collaborative works.
Recently, his Tabla was featured in a collaborative effort of Indian Classical Music and Jazz. The CD, called PROBE, is currently available under ‘World Music’ at the Sackler Gallery Bookstore in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Debu’s collaborative work with Strathmore in a CD called “Exit 1” liked by many DC area music critics. He also collaborated with the DC Rock band “Near Northeast” many times at the Kennedy center performances. He has also performed with PROBE at the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Center and Strathmore. Debu’s recent performance at the Kennedy Center with Gaurav Majumdar on Sitar has earned him wide scale accolades from the Washington music circle. He was also featured recently at the Library of Congress’s Musical archive on Indian Folk & classical music. Debu is the director of the Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland Chapter of Chhandayan (ছন্দায়ন), the only Tabla school in the DC Metro area, dedicated to the promotion of Tabla playing of Farukhabad style and North Indian Classical Music.
